ARCHIVE MARCH 22: Through The Eyes Of A Baseball Mom: Edmonton Collegiate Baseball Club’s Wagar Family

** originally posted on Win Column Sports** The  Edmonton Collegiate Baseball Club  begin their first official season this upcoming weekend (March 23rd and March 24th) on the road. Being that it is their inaugural season you probably are not very familiar with the Club. That is fine, you will learn more about them as coverage ramps up during the course of their very short season – the playoffs begin May 9th. Instead of doing the “usual” player write-ups heading into Opening Weekend, we are doing something slightly different. It takes someone special to be a sports Mom. I was lucky enough to easily find three Moms willing to do a write-up about their respective sons to help introduce them to you. Their point-of-view comes from countless hours of driving, cheerleading, and playing the role of sports psychologist. Tears of joy, tears of sadness and moments when there is no answer you can give your son because he needs to find those answers on his own. Let’s meet our first pl...

ARCHIVE MARCH 19, 2019: A Few Faces of the River Valley Vanguard, Part One

** originally posted on Win Column Sports** As a “non-soccer” guy, you will hear me talk about the River Valley Vanguard (RVV) more than the players. In part because the Supporters are the reason I bought season tickets to a team and sport I’d only watched less than a handful of times. Also in part because only when the season commences can one begin to slowly remove the “non-soccer guy” tag from himself and properly form player and team opinions. The Eddies  website  is a great source for current player news and the  Loyal Company of the River Valley Podcast  is a great fan-based show breaking down the news. This past Saturday all FC Edmonton “founding members”/season ticket holders received a note from General Manager  Jay Ball , “ can you believe we are now only 49 days away from our 1st CPL match on May 4th, and just 57 days away from our Inaugural CPL Home Opener on May 12th?”  Fast forward to today (March 19), the numbers update to 46 days away a...

Meet Edmonton Sports Fan Kim Manzo

Edmonton Sports Fans is looking to chat with a few fans. Today we speak with Kim Manzo, a self confessed "ex crazy soccer lady" who currently works with the Edmonton Stingers Basketball team. 1)Talk about your soccer super fan self. My time as a super soccer fan started with being born to an Italian family. It was always soccer or CFL football in our house. Once I got older, I started with helping my brother coach my nephew, to soccer director of my community and then jumping on the North Zone board, and then to working for FC Edmonton. I loved the professional aspect of working the ins and out of club life, but my passion started with youth soccer and bringing the best program to each child that stepped out on the pitch, but politics eventually got in the way as it does, and that is why I retired from being a volunteer after 15 years but super excited for the Euro Cup this year! Go Italy! (mocking can commence now) 2) Talk about your personal excitement in regards to...

Meet Kail Schofield

"Edmonton Sports Fans" would like to shine the light on Kail Schofield. A fan group focused on fans of Edmonton teams not blue and orange, he embodies the spirit, theme and culture trying to be created. The questions being asked are not for the purpose of getting answers but to hear the story. Here we go with Kail. Talk about your experience working with the Edmonton Stingers as they became the Stingers? Being the first office employee for a sports team is an interesting experience. When you're there at the very start, there are so many simple things that need to be done that you don't think of when you have to watch a sports franchise. What many people forget is that it is truly a business, and businesses have simple needs. Needs such as.... setting up a physical office and arming it with the necessities that it requires. Finding the right people to fulfill the right roles is crucial, as you need those personalities who are willing to sacrifice and buy-in for...

Baseball in Edmonton

“Baseball in Edmonton” By Len Nunes On October 24, 2003 T he Globe And Mail  wrote an article discussing the sale of the Triple A baseball team the Edmonton Trappers by its owners the Edmonton Eskimos. "Although the Edmonton Trappers won the Pacific Coast League championship in 2002 and averaged slightly better than 5,400 fans a game this season, the Eskimos announced yesterday they have sold the baseball team... The Eskimos' president and chief executive officer, Hugh Campbell, said that selling the baseball team became a necessity when the rival Cannons left Calgary in 2002 to become the Albuquerque Isotopes… "Scheduling, air and cross-border travel and the Canadian dollar were also factors in the PCL being desirous of not having a Canadian team in the league."” Fast forward over 16 years and the last four reasons listed by the then Eskimos President and CEO still ring true. Any wishes of seeing "affiliated baseball", meaning a team that is dir...
